Classroom Activity:
Look at Ceremonial cloak on the Wandana artefacts chart provided. Draw in sandpit with stick to create your own design for a Ceremonial cloak. Draw an outline of a kangaroo skin and draw/paint your own design.
Teachers Notes:
Aboriginal people of south, eastern Australia often wore possum skin cloaks which were worn for warmth, used as baby carriers at night, drums in Ceremony and for burial. They were worn from a young age with cloaks made from a few skins sewn together to wrap a baby. Over time and as the person grew, so did the size of their cloaks.
Kangaroo skins were also used to make cloaks for wearing with designs incised on the skin side for the wearer to represent their totems, status and kinship. The kangaroo meat was eaten, teeth used to make needles and sinew from the tail used as thread.
