Walking Together Through Story – Early Learning
“Inspiring connection to culture and belonging through hands on Aboriginal learning”.
Designed for Early Learning and Pre-school communities for children and educators to experience authentic Aboriginal culture in a fun, meaningful, safe and engaging way that builds connection, curiosity and belonging. Delivered by experienced educators with lived experience.
The Program starts with a traditional Aboriginal Ceremony including “Opening space, Didgeridoo, Acknowledgement to Country, Ochre face paint for kids and a gentle Smoking or Sweeping Ceremony that creates a respectful and exciting atmosphere for learning.
Next we will share animal dance movements and rhythms with the children in a fun, energetic and inclusive celebration.
Children explore a fascinating and unique range of authentic artefacts through guided discussion, role play and interactive Dreamtime storytelling that encourages imagination and connection.
Children discover the meanings behind traditional Aboriginal symbols before creating and painting their own personal Journey Stone to take home — celebrating identity, belonging and storytelling through art.
Together children and educators contribute to a collaborative stretch canvas artwork inspired by contemporary Aboriginal art styles and traditional symbols, respectfully capturing the story of the local Aboriginal people, as well as the story and spirit of the centre community.
The session concludes with a calming Aboriginal mindfulness practice called “Dadiri “, which is a gentle time for deep listening and quiet awareness, helping children feel grounded, calm and connected.

Led by passionate Aboriginal Educators, the Wandana Cultural Immersion Program invites students and teachers to walk together through storytelling, music, art, ceremony and hands-on cultural learning. Every experience is designed to inspire curiosity, deepen cultural awareness and create meaningful moments that students will remember long after the day is over.
Welcome to Country & Cultural Ceremony
The day begins with the school community gathering together in a spirit of respect and unity through an Acknowledgement of Country and traditional cultural ceremony.
Students and teachers are invited to take part in a traditional Smoking or Sweeping Ceremony, sharing respect for Country and the significance of caring for land, waterways and community. Traditional ochre may also be offered as part of this meaningful cultural experience.
This opening creates a powerful atmosphere of reflection, belonging and cultural understanding for the entire school community.
Yigi-Yigi — Didgeridoo, Song & Story
Students are captivated by the sound, rhythm and spirit of the Didgeridoo as they experience a live traditional performance and cultural storytelling session.
Through music, movement and interactive learning, students discover the origins of the instrument, how it is traditionally crafted, and the stories and customs connected to its use. Traditional and contemporary Aboriginal sounds combine to create an engaging and memorable cultural experience for all ages.
Culture Talk — Stories of Country
This engaging session explores Aboriginal history, local stories, symbols, traditions and the deep connection Aboriginal people have to Country.
Students gain insight into traditional life, significant places, community values and the importance of passing knowledge from Elders to future generations. They also learn the meanings behind Aboriginal symbols, artworks, carvings and storytelling practices, helping students connect culture with identity, belonging and respect.
Jurrngkurr — Artefacts & Traditional Knowledge
One of the most hands-on and exciting parts of the day, this session allows students to explore authentic Aboriginal artefacts from across Australia.
Students can see, hold and learn about traditional tools, hunting implements, weapons and handcrafted items while hearing the stories behind how they were made and used in everyday life. This interactive experience creates genuine curiosity and gives students a rare opportunity to connect with thousands of years of Aboriginal knowledge and innovation.
Julingkul Warrma — Painting Our School Story
The highlight of the program is the creation of a collaborative school story painting.
Together, students and teachers work alongside Aboriginal Educators to create a meaningful artwork representing the school’s journey, values, community and connection. Through symbols, storytelling and shared creativity, the artwork becomes a lasting legacy that reflects the spirit of the school and the voices of its students.

2. Acknowledgment to Country
An Acknowledgement of Country is a way of showing awareness of and respect for the traditional Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander owners of the land on which a meeting or event is being held, and of recognising the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to their Country. The Wandana School Acknowledgement to Country Program is the opportunity for the entire School community to create their very own personalized Acknowledgement to Country.
The Acknowledgement to Country will represent the local Aboriginal people, the schools history, core values, motifs & symbols, connection to community and the student body. We capture the true essence of your school, created by your students & teachers with our local Aboriginal Tutors. An authentic and comprehensive program run by local Indigenous Tutors aimed at maximising the learning opportunities for both students and teachers. The Acknowledgement to Country is then documented on a stretch canvas and decorated by students with their local painting for a lasting legacy for your school.

3. Journey Stones
The Wandana Journey Stones Program is a transformative cultural experience where students connect with Aboriginal stories, symbols and identity while discovering their own place within the journey of community, culture and Country.
- Step into the ancient language of Aboriginal symbols and discover the stories, wisdom and connections carried through Culture, Country and Dreaming for tens of thousands of years.
- Explore authentic Aboriginal artefacts and cultural practices, learning how storytelling, songlines, ochre, totems and art have guided identity, belonging and community across generations.

4. Wandana Songlines Dance Journey
Where movement becomes story, and culture comes alive through rhythm, connection and Country
- Immerse students in the powerful tradition of Aboriginal dance as a living expression of Culture, Country, storytelling and identity.
- Experience traditional movement, rhythm and storytelling that has been passed down through generations for tens of thousands of years.
- Learn how Aboriginal dance connects people to the land, animals, seasons, ancestors and the Dreaming through movement and ceremony.
- Explore the meaning behind traditional body paint, ochre symbols, animal movements and cultural performance practices in a respectful and engaging way.
- Participate in interactive dance workshops guided through authentic cultural storytelling, music, rhythm and movement.
- Build confidence, teamwork and self-expression as students move together in shared cultural experience and connection.

5. Dreamtime
The Sacred World. The Dreamtime is the Aboriginal understanding of the world, of its creation, and its great stories. The Dreamtime is the beginning of knowledge, from which came the laws of existence. For survival these laws must be observed. This program is an inspirational journey of Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, music, movement & dance together. It’s an opportunity for personal growth and enrichment and for the students to get a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture. School morning assembly starts with an Acknowledgement to Country followed by a Reconciliation prayer. Traditional ochre paint is then offered to students & School Leaders. This is followed by the smoking ceremony where all students, Teachers & Parents are encouraged to place one gum leaf into smoking Coolomon. Students (1 or 2 classes at a time) form a corroboree circle, offered face paint & listen to Dreamtime stories and its morals & values. Animal totems are then selected by students from the Dreamtime story and then form those body shapes. Traditional Bilma (clapping sticks) are then used to create rhythms along with music. Students then learn one traditional Aboriginal dance and one contemporary dance.
Dadirri (Aboriginal guided meditation) is next where all students are guided in deep listening. At the completion of the program a group photo is taken for the school and all students are given a Journey Stone as a gift of their time with Wandana.
