Teachers Notes:

In 1998 , the first National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Childrens Day was established on the 4th August and was set against the backdrop of protests led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their supporters during the bicentennial year. They decided a day was needed to celebrate our children, to grow their confidence and help them feel special and included. The date 4th August was historically used to communally celebrate the birthdays of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were taken from their families at a young age, without knowing their birthday- the Stolen Generation.

Taba Naba is a popular dance song about going out to the edge of the reef fishing.
It’s a fun song describing the everyday life and is a traditional song of the Torres Strait Islander people.
