Teachers Notes:

Aboriginal body painting and personal ornamentation is an ancient tradition which carries deep spiritual significance for the Australian Indigenous people. Their cultural rituals including body painting differ between different tribal groups and locations.

White ochre is a community colour and can be used by both girls and boys, women and men. It’s often used in Ceremony and ochre in general can also be used as a sunscreen, as well as being used from head to toe when hunting so as to mask any body odour an animal may recognise. Other general ochre colours used include yellow and red.
