Teachers will gain an insight into traditional Aboriginal art symbols, their meanings and stories and how they were used in different types of Aboriginal paintings including the materials used.

Introduction and welcome

The session starts with an Acknowledgement of Country followed by a traditional paint up using ochre paint.

This is followed by a Smoking Ceremony including the sounds of the Yidaki and clap sticks, as well a cleansing song.

Next you will learn insightful cultural information about Aboriginal History, culture, connection to country, spirituality as well as important significant cultural dates. This is important to create a foundation of basic cultural knowledge from which we move into further content.

Next you will learn the history of Aboriginal art, symbols, their meanings and how they have come about. You will learn all the different forms of Aboriginal art and how teaching is expressed through art.

Finally, you will gain an insight into the world’s oldest instrument. The Yidaki. You will learn about its origin, its importance in culture, the various forms of artwork, the traditional process in making a yidaki and information regarding circular breathing to play the yidaki.
